A 9-year-old girl Mexican girl whose name is Dafne, gave birth to a baby girl in Jalisco, Mexico on Jan. 27 according to a report from ABC News on Feb. 6. At a press conference this morning, Dr. Enrique Rabago, the director of Zoquipan Hospital stated that both mother and child were at home and are healthy. Authorities are searching for the 17-year-old father of the child and if found, he may be charged for unlawfully having a sexual relationship with the girl.
Lina Ginzalez Corona, who is a spokesperson at the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office stated, “Due to her young age, we don’t know if she is being entirely truthful.” The young mother had given Corona an account of the loving relationship she had with the boy. Corona said that Dafne and the 17-year-old were dating but the girl is reluctant to give any more information to Corona about their relationship.
According to Corona, Dafne didn't even know she was pregnant until the seventh month. The father of the baby recommended that she move in with him so they could raise the child together but she refused. After that, the boyfriend left town two months ago. State authorities are searching for the boyfriend in order to receive his account of what happened between the two.
Dafne is one of 11 children who lives with her parents in a poverty stricken neighborhood. “Her parents work all day and were not watching after her,” Corona said, “and therefore didn’t realize what was about to happen.” The girl gave birth by C-section because at her age her body wasn't ready to give birth and it was best for both mother and child.
