A 9-year-old girl has given birth to a baby girl in Mexico, according to a Feb. 6 New York Daily News report. Mexican authorities are reportedly searching for the baby’s 17-year-old father who fled after he found out about the pregnancy. According to the publication, the baby weighed just under six pounds when she was born in Zoquipan hospital, in the state of Jalisco, on Jan. 27.
The 9-year-old's own mother, identified only as Dafne, reportedly said that “[t]he girl was just over 8 when she got pregnant,” adding that “[t]he father is a boy who is 17, but we have not found him, since he ran away.”
State prosecutor Jorge Villasenor explained that authorities are searching for the father because the 9-year-old mother does not understand the significance of the couple’s actions. “We are looking for the young man to get his story because she does not understand what has happened,” said Villasenor. “This is a rape or child sex abuse case.”
