On Friday, Feb. 8, reports indicate that the 9-year-old girl who gave birth to a premature baby in Mexico has been sterilized in a Guadalajara hospital. The mother of the girl known as Dafne objected, but doctors carried out the procedure regardless.
Currently, the Zoquipan hospital in Jalisco Mexico is under investigation by the local human rights commission following a complaint by Dafne’s mother.
Authorities originally believed the biological father’s identity to be that of Dafne’s boyfriend that is between 15 and 17 years old.
The young man had fled two months before the child’s birth and cannot be found. He is being sought for questioning.
DNA testing is being conducted to determine the paternity of the newborn after claims of the stepfather abusing Dafne.
Lino Ginzalez Corona, spokesperson at Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office believes the pregnancy to have occurred as a result of rape or child sex abuse.
Dafne gave birth to a 5.95 lb. baby girl on Jan. 27, 2013. Both young mother and daughter are doing well and have been released to go home.
