Mexican officials are searching for the 17-year-old father of an infant girl born in Guadalajara, Mexico last week. The mother of the infant was a mere 9 years old, and unsure of what was happening, according to reports taken from hospital attending staff. Police spokesman Lino Gonzalez reported that the young mother did not even realize she was pregnant until the 3rd trimester. She became pregnant when she was only 8.
She did claim that the 17-year-old in question is her “boyfriend”, according to Associated Press reports. Authorities are pursuing rape charges. The mother of the 9-year-old child and grandmother of her baby says that the boy “ran away” approximately 2 months ago.
The baby girl was born on January 27, 2013. She was delivered via cesarean section at Zoquipan Hospital in Jalisco. Dr. Enrique Robago, hospital director, reported that mother and baby are doing well at an earlier press conference. Dr. Robago further commented, “Due to her young age and to the fact that her body was not ready to give birth the medical team decided a C-Section was the best option” for both mother and child.” They baby girl weighed in at approximately 5 pounds.
This young girl is among only a few others her age to survive pregnancy and childbirth. The physical and emotional tolls that this experience will carry on this child are as certain as they are unimaginable.
Young mothers are not uncommon at Zoquipan Hospital; more than 25% of recorded births are to teen mothers. Still, age 9 is hardly a teenager. Many children that age are in 2nd or 3rd grade in school. They watch cartoons and play with dolls. They are not equipped for sex, pregnancy, or motherhood.
Hospital officials say that the young mother will receive psychological care along with her recovery treatments.
