9 to 5, A Hard Working Day becomes a Broadway to Chicago Musical.

Just when you thought there weren't enough musical Broadway ideas based on 80's movie comedy's from the late show.   Here's 9 to 5: THE MUSICAL is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era. This new musical comedy, direct from Broadway, is based on the hit movie and features Dolly Parton’s original hit title song along with her new Tony® Award and Grammy nominated score.

9 to 5: THE MUSICAL tells the story of three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do — even in a man’s world. Outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, 9 to 5: THE MUSICAL is about teaming up and taking care of business… it’s about getting credit and getting even… and it’s about to open in Chicago!

9 to 5 the Musical went through its pre-Broadway trial in Los Angeles during September and October 2008, where it was met with rave reviews. 9 to 5 tickets for opening night were incredibly hard to come by, due to rumors that Dolly would be in the audience. For the first performance, a technical glitch stopped the show during Act 1 but the audience still walked out with positive things to say--thanks mostly to Dolly Parton, who saved the show! The LA Times reported that Dolly Parton (who was in the audience with Dabney Coleman, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin to watch the opening of the show) grabbed a mic from a nearby bodyguard and belted out "Workin' Nine to Five"

Once upon a time,  In 1980, a little movie about how three women in an office refuse to be patronized by their "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" of a boss any longer was released in theaters. That movie was called Nine To Five, and the reception for the comedy was very positive. It's hard to turn your nose up at a "girl power" movie with a sense of humor, and Dolly Parton's ability to poke fun at herself comes through in a genuine and hilarious way. When the three women reach a boiling point, their boss finds himself in hot water.

After an evening of fantasizing about how they would kill their boss if they could, the characters played by Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton eventually end up kidnapping him, holding him prisoner, and running the workplace their way. After over 25 years, Nine to Five is still a hilariously entertaining movie, and the stage musical has lived up to its predecessor in every way. That may have to do with the fact that Dolly Parton wrote the lyrics and music for the show herself and had a hand in its development for Broadway. Her hit song (the title song for the 1980 film) "Workin' Nine to Five" is in the show, and the 9 to 5 lyrics will be familiar to fans of Dolly Parton's work.

The 9 to 5 cast is incredibly talented, bringing a new sense of vivacity into the characters from the film. It doesn't hurt that Dolly Parton was there to help coach them along the way, either! She has a personal interest in the production and first-hand experience with the characters. According to Wikipedia, Jane Fonda wrote in her autobiography that Dolly Parton memorized the entire movie script before shooting began--now that's commitment!
