In honor of Will Eisner Week (the week of March 6th every year), the Comics Underground crew is joining forces with Portland publisher Dark Horse Comics Thursday March 7 to present a tribute to the comic book legend.
Dark Horse editor Diana Schutz worked with Eisner on his last book, Last Day In Vietnam, and she has chosen a collection of comics talent to present readings from this work . Some of the names are veterans of the live Comics Underground scene, some are brand new, but all are not to be missed.
Two architects of the Marvel Universe, Brian Michael Bendis (Powers, Ultimate Spider-Man) and Matt Fraction (Casanova, The Invincible Iron Man), will each be doing readings from Eisner's recollections of his time as a soldier and reporter in several wars. The staff at Marvel must be a bit nervous about having both men in the same place at the same time, but it's the audience who will benefit in any case.
Michael Avon Oeming, artist and co-creator of superhero procedural Powers (with Bendis) will be making his debut on the Underground's stage. Powers, a fan favorite for years, is back with Powers: The Bureau from Marvel Comics as well as a TV series in development.
Adding another egg to Marvel's basket is Kelly Sue DeConnick, author of the ongoing Captain Marvel, in addition to being cowriter with (who else?) Brian Michael Bendis on their two Castle graphic novels, based on the putative work of the ABC TV show character.
Last but not least, Eric Nebel (War And Peace: The Comic Book) will be handling a wordless Eisner story on violin, which is impressive to say the least.
Diana Schutz' previous celebration of Will Eisner Week was at Bridge City Comics' Graphic Novel Reading Club, where she spoke about her time with the comics great.
