The producers of the 85th Academy Awards telecast announced Friday that this year's program will feature a tribute to the James Bond movie franchise, which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2012.
"We are very happy to include a special sequence on our show saluting the Bond films on their 50th birthday," said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, known for movie musicals such as “Footloose” and “Chicago” as well as the TV series “Smash”. "Starting with 'Dr. No' back in 1962, the 007 movies have become the longest-running motion picture franchise in history and a beloved global phenomenon."
The key word there may be “franchise”, as there are plenty of series that have run longer, boast more entries, or both—including Japan's “Godzilla”, with 28 entries dating back to 1954 (29 if you count the 1998 installment by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich) and Chinese folk hero “Wong Fei Hung” with 89 films dating back to 1949.
This year's Oscar nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 5:30 a.m. PT (7:30 a.m. CT) from the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
The 85th Academy Awards telecast will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2013, live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
“Skyfall”—the 23rd James Bond film, starring Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, and Javier Bardem—is now showing in Kansas City theaters near you.
