ABC will be airing the 84th Academy Awards on Sunday, February 26th, at 8:30pm, ET. Billy Crystal is hosting, once again. Presenters include Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz and Emma Stone.
The Artist is set to sweep the Oscars, much in the way Adele just bulldozed the GRAMMY Awards. Despite not being named Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift, resting solely on her ability to perform in a way that is pleasing to music lovers, Adele walked away with every award for which she was nominated.
Malcolm Mcdowell is perhaps the most recognizable name attached to The Artist. Should this film carry the day as many expect, it will be due to such things as direction, writing, artistic composition and, heaven help us, talent.
The Adele phenominon stands as a fitting testiment, but further evidence that the entertainment industry may be evloving beyond the tedious popularity contest its award shows commonly present, Transformers: Dark of the Moon got only a couple nominations, and Mission Impossible got even less.
There is grumbling that The Artist is only receiving support from people who want to appear sophisticated and interesting. Be this the case, it is far preferable to the trend of lending support to movies simply because they have names like Cameron and Cruise attached to them.
