Doris Payne, 80, has been convicted of stealing an $8,900 ring from the San Diego Macy's store in Fashion Valley. During the trial, prosecutors said that Payne walked away from the jewelry counter with the ring and then sold it, while Payne's attorney says that she is not the thief that is in the store's video surveillance.
The jury found Doris Payne guilty of burglary and grand theft. She has not received a sentence as of yet, but it could be more than 5 1/2 years in jail.
Payne has a history of jewelry thefts that dates back to when she was a young woman. She boldly claims that she has shoplifted jewelry from New York to Monte Carlo. She said that she never carried a gun, nor smashed a window or broke into a safe. She remained pretty much anonymous for several decades, but then technology changed that. Her picture was posted on the internet and faxed to stores throughout the U.S. Security guards became aware of her and would watch her every move when she walked into a store.
Payne has been convicted of grand theft nine times in the U.S. Police records show that she stole a $8,500 ring in Nevada and a $31,500 ring in Palo Alto, which subsequently she tried to sell.
Halle Berry will be playing Doris Payne in the upcoming 2012 movie, Who is Doris Payne?
