On Friday, April 26 from 10 am to 2 pm, The Tennessee Career Center at Clarksville and Workforce Essentials along with the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Spring Job Fair. If you want to be ready for it, here are 8 ways to get ready and shine:
#1 Register @ www.jobs4tn.gov. Locate 3 to 5 ideal jobs that interest you. Print them out. Go to the local one stop and take any assessments prior to the job fair. These may include typing tests, entrance exams, work keys tests, etc. Ask questions to the career counselors about entrance exams required to apply for your positions of interest.
#2 Upload your resume, cover letter and supporting documents to the jobs4tn.gov site. Be sure that you resume has as its focus keywords, key achievements and a unique set of values associated with your ideal profession.
#3 Develop your targeted LinkedIn profile @ www.linkedin.com and begin to make connections with company representatives in Clarksville and the surrounding counties. See the chamber of commerce website for a list of companies in the area. For more details after signing up with LinkedIn, see Jason Alba’s so you’re linked in, now what via http://imonlinkedinnowwhat.com/dvd/.
#4 Follow the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development on Twitter
https://twitter.com/TNLabor.
#5 Check your business attire for the day. Be sure to dress one stop above the position that you seek. Ladies can be safe with a white shirt and dark skirt or loose fitting pants with small coordinating jewelry. Men can be safe with pressed dress up slacks and a nice white shirt and tie. Remember, you will never get a second chance to make a first impression.
#6 Revise your resume. Be sure that every sentence, phrase and statement on it reflects your brand (your profession), your achievements and your accomplishments mixed with relevant training, certifications and skills. Bring along your list of references for good measure. If you really want to shine, bring a set of networking business cards.
#7 Practice your 30 second elevator speech. I am _ who _. I seek to help companies with _. My passion is to _. Keep in mind that this speech should reflect your abilities to help the company. The old “I want a job where I can grow” is not the ideal elevator speech to focus for your 30 second elevator speech.
#8 Arrive early and plan to stay late. Be sure to request the name of the hiring official or team manager or HR representative when you are at the career fair. The company representative may not be the one who will actually have a say in bringing you in for an interview. Now once you have those names, be sure to come to your LinkedIn profile and add those to your networking team.
