8 Santas slugging: Santa street brawl following SantaCon 2013 NYC

SantaCon is a mostly adult oriented event taking place in many U.S. cities this time of year, where revelers dress up like the Claus and go bar hopping en masse. Later on in the evening of Dec. 14, when SantaCon 2013 in Manhattan was winding down around 8 p.m., a bunch of Santas got into a serious slug fest on a snow covered street on Third Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets.

The Santa brawl was captured by onlookers in the area and posted to YouTube.

Regarding the annual event for New York City, N.J. News posted:

According to the SantaCon official website, the event is for charity, however, many criticize it for being a giant party. The NYPD sent out a notice to bar owners in November asking them not to serve alcohol to anyone dressed in a Santa suit.

SantaCon started early this year in New York City, as participants dressed like Santa Claus were all scheduled to meet between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the north side of Tompkins Square Park.

No-one is certain whether or not the brawling Santas were SantaCon participants; but their outfits suggest that it’s a strong possibility.

Investigators with the NYPD are looking into the video, although no official complaints were actually filed regarding the Santa brawl. The eight fighting Santas had all dispersed by the time police arrived on the scene.

Because there is a history of drunkenness, fighting, public urination and public vomiting associated with SantaCon, some establishments post signs announcing that they’re not participating in the event, and refuse to serve anyone in a Santa outfit.

This year, several thousand Santas participated in SantaCon 2013 NYC. At least one Santa injury was reported with a Kris Kringle clad character taken to Bellvue to be treated “after getting hit in the neck with broken glass during a bar fight.”
