On Friday, Microsoft announced that it was going to make a limited amount of 32GB Dell Venue Pro 8 tablets available for $99 this coming Monday. If you aren't one of the first twenty people in line, then you can get it for $199. The Venue Pro 8 currently retails for $299, which is already an excellent price for this groundbreaking tablet.

Basic specs:

  • 8.5 x 5.12 x .35 inches
  • .87 lbs
  • 1.8GHz quad-core Bay Trail Atom processor
  • 32GB or 64GB flash storage with 2GB RAM
  • 8-inch IPS display with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution
  • Intel Gen 7 Graphics chip

Build and design

The Venue Pro 8 is a slickly designed tablet that feels comfortable in your hands. One might fault Dell for putting the Home button on the side of the unit rather than on the bottom. However, this prevents you from accidentally pressing the Home button, which can happen easily with other Windows tablets.

When held vertically, the slate's thick black bezel hosts a 1.2MP front camera and white LED light at the top right. The tablet's black back panel has small ridges for an easy grip. There is a 5MP camera at the top and a Dell logo in the center. The Venue 8 Pro is also available in red, though that version looks rather awkward.

Screen

Unlike other tablets, the Venue Pro 8 doesn't boast a full high resolution screen. Instead, you have to opt for the 1280 x 800 pixel resolution screen that would have been nice two years ago. However, the screen is bright and colorful. It also looks good when viewed at extreme angles.
