8 Baptist distictives

There are many people that float from church to church, crossing denominational lines, and they never seem to settle anywhere in particular. A common statement, or at least thought, is: "It doesn't matter where I go. They're all the same. I don't see a difference."

There is a difference, especially when it comes to Baptists.

Baptists have a rich heritage, which many Baptists know nothing about. This heritage, reaching back to the time of Christ, has defined several key elements regarding theology; and these distinctives set Baptist apart from all other groups. Historically, there have been groups that have held to these distinctives since the time of Christ, whether they held the name "Baptist" or not.

There are, of course, many "denominations" of Baptists, each with their own particular differences. Generally speaking, they all hold to these Baptist distinctives as well.

So, what are these distictives? There are 8 of them, and they can simply be represented by an acrostic using the name "baptists."

  1. Biblical Authority - The Bible, not a man or heirarchy, is the final authority in all matters
  2. Autonomy of the Local Church - Each church stands independently, while still allowing fellowship between churches
  3. Priesthood of each Individual Believer - Each believer can approach the very throne of God without going through a priest or other person
  4. Two Scriptural Offices (Pastor and Deacon)
  5. Individual Soul Liberty (Liberty of Conscience) - Each person is accountable only to God for their faith, and God has given each person a freewill to decide on their own
  6. Saved Church Membership - The Church membership is made up of only born-again believers; membership is not automatically granted because of birth or other rite
  7. Two Scriptural Ordinances (Lord’s Supper and Baptism)
  8. Separation of Church and State - The affairs of both the churches and the government are to be kept separate to avoid an unbiblical blurring of the two institutions

Several of these distinctives are held by many Christian groups, but a true Baptist holds to all of these. Each of these can and should be studied in greater detail. Especially in days like these, it is important to know what you believe and why you believe them.

I'm sure it won't surprise you when I say I've never heard of these...and I was actually surprised about the last one: Separation of Church and State. I would have thought just the opposite!

    Well written :)

Have you ever heard of a book by Walter B. Shurden, "Baptist Identity: Four Fragile Freedoms"? I think you'd be interested in it. He lays about Baptist ID through Soul Freedom, Bible Freedom, Church Freedom, and Religious Freedom. It's a short book and an easy read. You should check it out.

    Blessings!
