The earthquake occurred at 1:47in the afternoon, Hawai`i time, off the coast of northern Chile.
The 8.2 magnitude earthquake was centered about 83 kilometers northwest of Iquique, Chile. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Authoritis have ordered evacuation of Chile's low-lying coastal areas.
UPDATE: As of 6:30 Hawai`i Time, five are believed dead in Chile.
On this day, 68 years ago, Hawai`i was struck by a devastating tsunami which instigated the modern tsunami watch system for the vulnerable island chain.

LOCATED CLOSER TO THE EARTHQUAKE. AN EVALUATION OF THE PACIFIC
WIDE TSUNAMI THREAT IS UNDERWAY AND THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT
HAWAII COULD BE ELEVATED TO A WATCH OR WARNING STATUS.
