I thought I’d be writing about this year’s 7th Annual Twin Cities Hip Hop Awards but apparently it’s been canceled, at least for the time being. Remember the fuss about last year’s event? The violence that broke out on the floor at First Avenue and that it had to be shut down early by the police? Well apparently the Myth doesn’t want to revisit last year’s issues and have officially shut down the event.
The event that was to take place Friday, February 22nd at the Myth included acts such as Toki Wright, Ashley Dubose, Dopesic, Skip Grandz, B Rolla, Meta, Mike Dreams, Buddah Bless, and Xavier Marquis; was expected to sell out as in previous years.
Now there hasn’t been an announcement of where it is to be held, if the event is to be rescheduled or is simply cancelled this year but it looks like the Myth will have some angry acts and fans on their hands as well as the City of Maplewood.
TCHHA organizer’s claim that they were given their deposit back by the Myth and the show was never advertised on the Myth website, nor was there any promotion of the event itself. The Myth supposedly claimed that it was the City of Maplewood that shut down the event due to worries about last year’s violence.Eeither way this could mean bad business for the Myth considering the brief shut down they had in 2009 due to supposed finanical issues. This event would have made a huge draw.
In any case it is still up in the air as to what will become of this year’s event what the future holds for the Twin Cities Hip Hop community. It’s unfortunate this great and popular Twin Cities event has gotten a bad rap due to the anger issues of a small few.
