This year was my first time to attend the Crunchies Award Show. I was excited about kickstarter being nominated at the best over all start-up because I have seen a few successful projects throughout the year including my article about Zackees. John Oliver, former Daily Show correspondent hosted the Crunchies. John Oliver made the Crunchies less awkward (lets face it us geeks are a bit awkward socially) and hilarious.
John Oliver did a great job poking fun at us Silicon Valley nerds by saying "You’re no longer the underdog!” then goes on to saying “You’re accused of over-gentrifying a city that was already the most expensive city to live in!” I couldn't agree more since Twitter has moved in to my neighborhood however he was also eluding to the protesters outside Davies Hall. It's not a San Francisco event without protesters whose main complaints were displacement of longtime San Francisco residents, Ellis Act evictions, and a call for tech companies to pay more in taxes to the city.
Like past Crunchies it was a night of awkward acceptance speeches and inside jokes but also celebrating our achievements in the tech world throughout the exciting year of 2013. For videos of the Crunchies including the opening musical performance click here and below are the winners of the awards ceremony. Till next year geeks!
