Jennifer Tello, blue, vs Lauren Brunsky in the 65 lb weight class.

Female boxers highlighting the event

The growing popularity of female boxing is evident in the Kansas City area. Eight females ranging from the junior 65 lb class to the senior division women light welterweight (132 lbs) had the crowd cheering.

At 65 lbs, Jennifer Tello of KCK PAL-AGIF took the fight to Lauren Brunsky of Turner Golden Gloves. Lauren put up a fight herself but not enough to pull the victory. Jennifer of the popular Tello boxing family was able to win the judge's decision.

Melissa Macias of Bad Boyz boxing from Garden City, Kansas may convince her coach, Robert Gonzales, that the club's name may need a touch up as she was victorious in her bout against Karla Delgado of KCK PAL-AGIF.

Karla showed glimpse of great timing in her counter punches and her perseverance was commendable. Melissa was able to use her reach advantage as she put together some great stiff jabs followed by a sound straight right. Melissa showed great potential with her composure and command of the fight.

Itzel Alvidrez of Bad Boyz boxing and Raina Esparza of Turner Golden Gloves escalated the crowds cheers as they brought the fight to the ring. Itzel would not back down as she threw her punches non-stop with harmful intentions.

However, Raina displayed her experience in her defensive skills covering her head and countering with shots between Itzel's punches. The fight was very close as both boxers continued to their exchange throughout the fight. Raina landed the more effective punches from her jabs and straight rights to win the decision.

Itzel's left and right hooks were very effective along with her hard jabs. Overall, this was an exciting bout.

Jasmine House, black top, against Angela Bridges.

Girl power on display

A first round stoppage was at the hands of Jasmine House of Haskell Boxing Club from Lawrence, Kansas.

Angela Bridges of Bad Boyz and Jasmine were eager to get the fight going as they were in their fighting stance ready to go rather than touching gloves before the fight started.

Jasmine used her height and reach to land three effective rights followed by a hard right hook to Angela's head.

Referee Shannon Washam quickly stepped in with the standing 8-count after Jasmine's hard hook. The referee made the call to stop the fight with less than one minute in the first round.

(A referee stoppage is for the safety of the boxer and a call for the fight to discontinue. A knock out is when a fighter is unable to continue irregardless of the referee's call. Amateur boxing has a strict policy on ensuring the safety of the fighter as the referee is given the total authority to stop the fight at any time.)

Guillermo Tello

Guillermo Tello of KCK PAL-AGIF displayed great potential and maturity as a boxer. The strength in his legs were evident as he bounced effectively around his opponent going in and out after putting together hard combination punches.

His style is reminiscent of a young Hector 'Macho' Camacho. His opponent, William Medina of KCMO PAL had a hard time taking the initiative due to Guillermo's footwork. William was able to land some solid one punchers but combination punches are needed to get the judge's scores. Both boxers were physically in great shape as the intensity of the fight persisted throughout the fight.

Caleb Brayman

In the welterweight class (141 lbs), Caleb Brayman of KCK PAL-AGIF put together quite a few head snapping 1 - 2s (jab-right cross) on Bahadeer Jacob of Danger Fire Boxing from Holton, Kansas.

Caleb's punches are not only painful to see land but his precise target on the upper half of his opponent's head causing the head to snap back is very effective in amateur boxing. It is an easy punch to see and the dramatic snap of the head makes it an easy score for the judge's to make.

Caleb was very effective with his punches and Bahadeer's lack of defense made this a high score fight for Caleb. The greatest defense to a 1-2 is to keep the gloves up over the head because a judge normally wouldn't count deflected punches even though it goes through a defense.

Bahadeer pressed the fight and his fortitude is of a warrior, he'll stand out as a formidable opponent with more experience.

Jacob Wilhelm

KCK PAL-AGIF's welterweight (152 lbs) Jacob Wilhelm showed great potential as an upcoming boxer against Johnathan Garcia of Turner Golden Gloves.

Jacob displayed great movement and balance against Johnathan's relentless aggression. Johnathan showed a lot of heart which will take him far in the sport . Jacob's movements and combination punches was effective to win the fight.

Most outstanding boxer of the event, Darin Hampton in black top.

Most outstanding boxer of the event

Turner Golden Gloves' boxer, Darin Hampton, was awarded the most outstanding boxer of the event.

Darin displayed great composure as he avoided his opponent's attacks and effectively put together a blurring speed of counter combination punches to earn the judge's decision.

His timing was impeccable as he was able to catch Steven Garcia of Bad Boyz pressuring the attacks. Steven put together some impressive combination punches of his own but wasn't able to avoid Darin's counter punches.

Darin, with a current total of 27 amateur fights, is fighting at lightweight (132 lbs) and said that he's ready for the upcoming Kansas City Golden Gloves in April.

John Collins

The evening ended with a pair of heavyweights at 195 lbs. Alondis Wilson of KCK PAL-AGIF had the height advantage but John Collins of Gold's Gym Boxing had the strength.

John was the fearless aggressor and his strength seemed to overwhelm Alondis in the first round. Alondis gave up his reach advantage by stepping too far into his punches which allowed John to get inside and land inside hooks empowered with his strength.

John continued to pressure Alondis and landed effective hooks along with the overhand rights to take the win. John, 31, has been training for 10 months and currently has 5 amateur fights. He is a heavyweight to be on the look out for with his fearless aggression and grizzly bear-like strength.

When asked what she would like to do different for next year's event? She replied, "Get main stream media more involved; it's been like pulling teeth to get our local media with cameras here to see the good thing that's happening in our boxing community." That is the common frustration shared by the local boxing community throughout the Midwest.
