A 741-pound alligator set new Mississippi State records, according to a Sept. 11 News Oxy report. An alligator hunting team comprised of Jimmy Greer, John Ratcliff and Jennifer Ratcliff pulled the giant gator out of the backwaters of the Mississippi River.
The 741-pound alligator not only broke the record for the heaviest alligator caught in Mississippi, but it also broke the record for the longest gator caught in the state at 13 feet and 6.5 inches. That's an amazing catch for this team of alligator hunters.
The group spent about half an hour trying to catch the alligator. The struggle ended up causing three broken lines, but eventually they wrestled the beast out of the water. This 741-pound alligator ended up breaking the previous record of a 723-pound alligator. That lizard was caught just a week ago by Beth Trammell of Madison.
It's certainly strange that two record breaking alligators were caught just a week apart in Mississippi. Who knows how long this 741-pound alligator will hold the record. Hopefully it will be for more than a week.
