If you've been to a burlesque show and found yourself enchanted from all the glamor, glitz and pageantry, you maybe wondering how you might get involved.
Dallas has a vibrant burlesque community complete with its own burlesque festival. With producers like La Divina Productions and Bewitching Burlesque Revue producing shows like Burlesque Nocturne and Gifts and Garters, it's easy to find ways to get involved in all the fun. If you don't know where to start, this list should point you in the right direction.
1. Take a class: You may not realize it, but there are a handful of studios that offer burlesque classes in Dallas and the surrounding communities. This is a great and fun way to try out some burlesque moves even if you're not ready to "bare it all."
2. Go to shows: This seems pretty obvious, but if you really want to get involved, get out there and go see as many burlesque shows as you can. This way you get to know performers and fans. Keep your ears peeled and your eyes open. You never know who you might meet, or what opportunity could be presented to you.
3. Network: If you are really passionate about burlesque and want to get involved, reach out to producers and performers. With social networking sites and email, it's easier than ever to get in touch and meet new people. Have a question? Want to offer a service, or a chance to dance? You have to let yourself be known, because no one will start your career for you.
4. Attend festivals: Dallas has a nice burlesque community, but it's just a small piece of the pie. There's a huge national and international scene with festivals from Dallas to Paris. These festivals are perfect opportunities to meet up with dancers, vendors and even burlesque legends. Why not turn your next vacation into a burlesque holiday?
5. Be a Stage Kitten: Every burlesque show needs a sassy Kitten or two. These bombshells help stage props and pick up clothing after each act. Sometimes known as "pick-up artists" or "panty-wranglers," this is a fun position that gives you a chance to dress up, develop your stage persona and ham it up in front of an audience without the commitment to pasties and a g-string.
6. Sell/make something: At many shows and festivals, you will find vendors selling handmade pasties, costumes and other vintage or retro goodies. If you are crafty, why not find a way to focus your craft on something that can be sold at a burlesque show?
7. Start your own troupe/production company: Finally, if you have your act, have your name and are ready to bare it all, why not start your own show? Everyone has to start from somewhere. Talk to producers around town, hold auditions, find a venue and market your show. You can do it!
