7-Eleven, Inc. is celebrating its 83rd birthday by giving away free 7.11-ounce Slurpee drinks on Sunday, July 11. The Dallas-based chain dubs July 11, or 7/11, as 7-Eleven Day.
Participating 7-Eleven stores will offer the free drinks in special birthday cups as long as supplies last. The chain expects to serve 5 million of the frozen carbonated beverages on July 11. The free Slurpee celebration has been held every July 11 since 2002.
Austin has 15 7-Eleven stores located throughout the city. To find a location near you, use the 7-Eleven store locator located at www.7-eleven.com.
This year, 7-Eleven is kicking the celebration up a notch by launching its second annual Battle of the Bands contest on the same day. Starting this Sunday, 12 bands will perform in venues around the country on selected dates. For each venue, three competing bands will open for an established, headlining band. This Sunday, competing bands will play starting at 7 p.m. as opening acts for Train. No Austin bands are in the competition, but two Texas bands are competing: Don’t Shoot The Messenger, of Arlington; and News Team Assemble, of Dallas.
Fans can watch the performances live online on Slurpee’s Facebook fan page: www.facebook.com/Slurpee, then vote for their favorite band at Slurpee.com for up to three days after each concert. The winning band will receive $10,000, be featured on Wolfgangsvault.com and get a chance to record in-studio.
The current schedule for the concerts is:
- July 11 – San Francisco (headliner: Train)
- July 23 – Chicago (headliner: All Time Low.)
- August 6 – Dallas (headliner: B.o.B.)
- August 16 – New York (headliner: N.E.R.D.)
