Summer has been one of the coolest in recent years for Bay Area residents. For those who live in San Francisco, the sun has barely made an appearance. Getting out of town into summer weather has become a weekend priority. Why not plan your staycation to include a hotel with a delightful pool? Fortunately there are a variety of hotels and resorts within a short drive that have both pools and warm weather. Here are a few of my favorites, all within a two hour drive from San Francisco.

Solage Calistoga: This property has two beautiful pools and provides luxury accommodations, gourmet dining and a spa. This is a great place for your next stay-cation. Choose from the adult-only pool and hot-tub or the family pool with a large pool deck and lots of lounge chairs. Schedule spa time for the signature Mudslide Treatment and then relax pool-side.

Flamingo Resort, Santa Rosa: Combine a trip to the wine country with a fabulous pool experience at this retro-hotel. Movie stars from the 1950s liked to spend their weekends here and it’s easy to see why. The adjacent restaurant provides outdoor seating next to the pool and offers a Champagne Sunday brunch. Get to the pool early to secure a lounge chair and sit back and enjoy the pool-side food and beverage service while you enjoy the sun’s rays. Rooms have recently been renovated and are large compared to today’s standards with luxury linens, comfortable beds, dreamy pillows and plenty of closet space.

The Lodge at Tiburon: Enjoy a fabulous pool experience a short ferry ride from San Francisco. You will feel like you are in a European city when you step off the boat in Tiburon, while enjoying fantastic San Francisco views. The Lodge at Tiburon was renovated recently where you can enjoy luxuriously appointed rooms, fine dining and easy accessibility to Tiburon’s shops and restaurants.

River Terrace Inn, Napa: This boutique hotel is conveniently located next to the Napa River. Choose a balcony room to enjoy great views and a glass of wine in the afternoon. The walking trail provides easy access to other nearby properties, such as the Westin Verasa. The rooms are designed with an understated elegance in soothing color schemes and include a comfortable bed with high thread count sheets, soft pillows and air conditioning. The pool looks out toward the river and has comfortable lounge chairs. Staying in Napa provides access to great wineries and gourmet fine-dining in downtown Napa.

Hyatt Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco: Fisherman’s Wharf isn’t just for tourists. Locals like it there too, they just know where to go to avoid the crowds. The Hyatt is an oasis with a lovely pool and ample chaise lounges. Rooms are modern with amenities that matter - comfortable beds and linens, on-premise restaurant and bar and its bay location.

Claremont Hotel, Club & Spa, Berkeley: Take a short drive across the bay to the historic Claremont Hotel. This elegant hotel has been a favorite of Bay Area natives since 1915. Enjoy the gourmet restaurant, spa services and their expansive pool with lots of room to accommodate sun-seekers. They have some of the best San Francisco views throughout the property.

San Jose Airport Garden Hotel: You might not think this hotel with its close proximity to the airport would be worth visiting, but you would be wrong. This hotel is located on 17-acres of gardens, with waterfalls and meandering paths. The large pool is tucked away in the garden. The restaurant and bar have outdoor seating overlooking the gardens and pool. It is the perfect place for a sunny weekend getaway in the heart of Silicon Valley. Many rooms have balconies or patios that look out onto the gardens with soothing water-features.
