6th Annual "Food Fight Against Hunger"

Come out and help your community while cheering on your favorite chef at the 6th Annual "Food Fight Against Hunger". Proceeds benefit the Visalia Rescue Mission. Growing up in the valley, I’ve known the Visalia Rescue Mission has always involved the community to get support to feed Visalia’s hungry and VRM has grown in years. They have a full time kitchen – where anyone who is in need can get breakfast, lunch and dinner, all year round. There are two thrift stores that welcome donations of household items and clothing. They also have found a great way to involve community as well as supporting locally grown and sustainable goods – A produce stand featuring fresh goods such as grapes, nectarines, peaches, peppers, melons and heirloom tomatoes, just to name a few. The stand is open Monday – Friday from 10am-6pm, off of Race and Santa Fe. A project four years in the making, the produce stand harvests enough crops to keep their kitchen going and can now be shared with the community. However, the need for local support, funds and volunteers is great – when approximately 500 meals are served daily. Visalia Rescue Mission has annual events such as the Thanksgiving “Race Against Hunger 5K” and the upcoming “Food Fight Against Hunger” on July 20th.
The funds raised at these events and from thrift store sales benefit more than just the kitchen – there is also a men’s shelter and women’s and children’s shelter where as many as 200 warm safe beds are occupied per night. The number of those in need is outstanding and continues to grow – our community is blessed to have the staff that runs the Mission and those who volunteer and support it all year round.
The $25.00 ticket includes hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer. There are also cooking demonstrations going on thru the event as well as an amature chef cooking contest. Local chef David Vartanian, from the Vintage Press, will be on hand to give cooking demonstrations, as well as share some of his signature tasty bites. I've been lucky to go to several of these annual events and always have had a great time, and enjoyed watching the chef competitions in particular, seeing members of the community come together and do what they love with passion, to help out a great cause is always worth it! There will be live music and a raffle with some excellent prizes donated from local venders during the event. Save the date for Sunday July 20th from 3p-6pm t the Holiday Inn Visalia Airport.
