Movie theaters might be reaching the peak of summer blockbuster season, but the television industry is already gearing up for its biggest event - coming soon to a small screen near you.

"The Voice" host Carson Daly and "The Mindy Project" creator, executive producer, actress and writer Mindy Kaling officially kicked off awards season this morning with their announcement of the 66th Primetime Emmy nominations from the Television Academy headquarters in North Hollywood, Calif.

Usual cable suspects "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," "Downton Abbey" and "Game of Thrones" welcomed newcomer "True Detective" in the Outstanding Drama category, while the success of Netflix's original series showed no signs of slowing down. Political thriller "House of Cards" is standing strong for the second consecutive year with nods for Outstanding Drama, Outstanding Lead Actor (Kevin Spacey), Outstanding Lead Actress (Robin Wright), Outstanding Guest Actress (Kate Mara) and Outstanding Guest Actor (Reg E. Cathey). Smash hit and Outstanding Comedy nominee "Orange Is the New Black" boasts honors for five of its stars, including a leading role nod for Taylor Schilling, a supporting nomination for Kate Mulgrew, and Guest Actress accolades for Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox and Natasha Lyonne.

Blogosphere grumblings surrounding the continued lack of Emmy love for BBC's "Orphan Black," and particularly its multi-tasking star Tatiana Maslany, have lit up social media, alongside other hotly contested snubs for FX's "The Americans," NBC's "Hannibal," AMC's "The Walking Dead," and FOX's Best Comedy Series Golden Globe winner "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Despite inevitable protests from jilted fans, plenty of celebration did ensue for first-time nominees like "Masters of Sex" star Lizzy Caplan and HBO's freshman comedy "Silicon Valley."

HBO's staggering 99 nominations once again gave the cable giant a runaway lead in total nods for any network, and its hit fantasy epic "Game of Thrones" followed suit with 19 nods of its own - more than any other contending series.
