60 openings left for low-cost male cat neutering this Sunday

Eligible cat owners in Sacramento and Yolo counties can receive hundreds of dollars worth of health care services for their male cats for only $15 this weekend. Appointments are still available at local vet clinics participating in Spay Day Sacramento 2013.

There are 60 appointments left for male cats to be neutered this Sunday” says Alexis Raymond of the Sacramento Area Animal Coalition (SAAC), “and it is a really great deal for pet owners”.

For just $15 in cash, a male cat can be neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and given flea treatment. These important services are valued at $250.

To qualify, pet owners must be residents of Sacramento or Yolo Counties, and have a total household income of $35,000 a year or less. Proof of income is required and applications must be completed on line by clicking here.

Now in its 14th year, the Sacramento event is part of a nationwide Spay Day program which offers the low cost services to qualified cat and dog owners. Spay Day Sacramento is the largest in the country to participate in the annual event, with more than 700 animals receiving spay and neuter services in essentially one day.

Raymond says that this year the program is being dedicated to the memory of Roy Marcum. Marcum, an animal control officer with the Sacramento County municipal shelter, was shot and killed in the line of duty in November of 2012.

Getting your pets fixed has a direct, positive impact on the people and animals of Sacramento. Giving birth and being in heat are physically very strenuous for animals, and can significantly decrease their health and life span. In addition, the surgery can help protect animals from risks of cancer and other ailments.

Unfixed pets and their offspring place a burden on your wallet whether you own a pet or not, as unwanted puppies and kittens must be handled by tax payer funded city and county shelter facilities.

SAAC also offers voucher programs throughout the year to help residents receive reduced cost spay and neuter services for household pets and feral cats. For more information, visit the SAAC website at www.sacanimal.org.
