One day after a first-grader brought 11 packets of heroin to her school, Barry Elementary School, located in West Philadelphia, according to police, the student’s mother and the her live-in boyfriend were arrested on endangerment and drug charges.

Police and prosecutors say that Marie Hunter, 32, the child’s mother, and Christopher Troy-Jenkins White, 28, both of Viola Street near 42nd, are being charged with reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child and possession of narcotics.

When a teacher discovered Hunter’s 6-year-old daughter handling 10 plastic packets of white powder yesterday around lunchtime, the police were notified. Police as well as paramedics quickly responded to the call, as they hurried to the school located on Race Street near 59th

Police confiscated the drugs, while paramedics tended to the girl, who complained of stomach pains after apparently tearing open a packet with her teeth, police said. Hunter's daughter was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where Southwest Detectives recovered an additional packet of what is alleged to be heroin from the girl’s pants pocket. The 6-year-old girl was treated and released. The young girl now is in the custody of the city's Department of Human Services.

According to WXYZ, school officials disclosed the discovery of the packets of white substance also caused an impromptu field trip for 20 of the 6-year-old’s classmates. Several of the paramedics on the scene boarded a school bus with the students, where as a precaution, they were taken the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for evaluation.

Narcotics Field Unit officers went to the student’s family home where they confiscated 18 packets of marijuana from a second-floor bedroom.

Show and Tell, the popular event we all probably remember, has taken place in elementary schools across the country for years, but it is certainly not what it used to be.
