According to ABC News on Monday, Carnival Cruise Lines say a 6-year-old boy has drowned in one of its pools while at sea.
The boy has been identified as Qwentyn Hunter of Winter Garden, Fla. Investigators say the boy was with his 10-year-old brother in the pool at the time.
The company says in a statement that the Carnival Victory ship was on the last leg of a four-day Caribbean cruise on Sunday when the boy drowned. He was at the pool area with other family members.
“Carnival extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family during this very difficult time. The company’s CareTeam is providing assistance and support,”
Passengers pulled the boy from the pool and immediately tried to perform CPR, but Qwentyn was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cruise Critic member Charleyann wrote on the Cruise Critic Message Boards that her friend had been on the ship when the incident happened: “DJ Alex spotted something floating in the pool. A passenger dove in and got child out. Paramedics, crew and one passenger worked on this child for 30 minutes as passengers looked on in horror.”
The ship arrived in Miami Monday and NBC 6 video showed the pool closed with crime scene tape and officials taking pictures of the scene.
Police said the incident appears to be accidental and foul play was not suspected, but said an investigation is on-going.
