6-month-old shot, dies, police say baby's father had gang ties, criminal record

There is an update on the heartbreaking story of a 6-month-old baby who died after being shot five times in broad daylight Monday. Chicago police say that they believe the shooting was gang related and that the baby's father, Johnathan Watkins, had gang ties and a long criminal history, Chicago police said Tuesday.

The Washington Post reported Tuesday, "Jonathan Watkins belongs to a gang and has a long criminal history, and Monday’s attack appears to have been gang-related, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said at a Tuesday news conference. He said police weren’t sure yet whether Watkins will decide to cooperate in the investigation."

“No child, certainly not an infant, should be a victim of gang violence,” McCarthy said.

Baby Jonylah Watkins died at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago. She underwent surgery for her shooting injuries but she later died.

The 6-month-old’s father, Jonathan Watkins, is fighting for his life, in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Chicago police are scouring the South Side neighborhood of Woodlawan, where the shooting happened, for surveillance security video and any other clues that will help them find a suspect.

Witnesses told police that the gunman shot Jonathan Watkins around 1 p.m. Monday and started shooting at him while he was changing his daughter’s diaper. At the time, Watkins was outside standing beside his car while changing is daughter’s diaper. Baby Jonylah was on the front seat.

Jonathan Watkins suffered gunshot wounds to the side buttocks. He also had a graze wound to the face. But Jonylah was shot five times, in the shoulder, lung, thigh, liver and bowels.

The family has been hit by gun violence before. The baby’s mother, Judy Watkins, was shot in her knee when she was pregnant with Jonylah.

Police are still looking for the gunman, the baby's grandmother, Mary Young, told ABC7 News, ""I just want whoever did this, it was very cowardly, and to turn himself in.."
