Grilled cheese is always delicious, but there are some ways to make it even better.
Choose a cheese that melts well. Parmesan and feta won’t do the trick here. Even mozzarella won’t be suitable. Instead, choose cheddar, Swiss, Gruyere, or even Brie cheese.
Use small pieces of cheese. Either slice your cheese extra-thin, or skip the slicing altogether and grate it instead. This will help the cheese melt more quickly and evenly.
Don’t use a high temperature. Cook your sandwich slowly, over low or medium-low heat. Otherwise, your bread will get too dark before the cheese has a chance to melt.
Butter both sides. Spread a thin layer of butter on both sides of each slice of bread before toasting.
Make some additions. Try adding tomato, raspberry or pepper jam to your sandwich. Or, add some arugula, caramelized onions or tomato slices before grilling.
Let it sit. Allow your sandwich to rest for about 5 minutes before cutting it up or biting into it. This will give the cheese time to harden up a bit so it doesn’t slide right out of the sandwich. But don’t let it rest for too long, or your sandwich will get cold!
