6 Horses Seized in Andover

Today, Connecticut Department of Agriculture, with the assistance of the Connecticut State Police seized 6 horses that were said to be starving, emaciated and injured from a residence in Andover, CT, on Hebron Road. The horses were taken into state custody.

The horses were owned by  James Hemond. The barn was naught but a burnt out remnant and the horses were "housed" in an area of danger with debris and other hazards scattered about. The horses were also extremely emaciated from lack of food and many had injuries from their poor living conditions.

The horses involved included two Percheron draft horses, two miniature horses, a young quarter horse and a paint stallion.

"In cases such as these, the priority is getting the animals the care they need," state Agriculture Commissioner Steven K. Reviczky said in a press release. "The Department of Agriculture has an obligation to take custody of these animals to ensure their protection and safety."

From here, the horses go to a veterinarian for examinations and then they will have a temporary home at Second Chance in Niantic. Once they are back to health, permanent homes will be sought.
