If you're thinking about adding more vegetables to your diet, you may actually end up adding more fruit to it if you don't know the difference between a fruit and a vegetable (that is, botanically speaking). Although many popular fruits are prepared as vegetables for culinary purposes, they are actually fruits.
According to botanists, by definition, a fruit is a part of a plant that develops from the flower and contains the seeds. The other parts of the plant, such as the stems, the roots, the leaves, and the flower bud are considered the vegetables.
Fruits are often sweeter than their vegetable counterparts, but some are not the classic form of sweetness you would expect as in conventional fruit such as the apple, grapes, oranges, and bananas. This is where the confusion normally occurs. It also occurs in how the fruit is prepared.
While most people would never cook an apple, an orange, or banana with a dinner meal, certain fruits are commonly used and mistakenly considered vegetables with popular dishes.

Though botanically different, fruits and vegetables share major health benefits when consumed regularly. For one, they are very low in calories compared with other foods such as meats, dairy, and grains. They also give off more energy to the body for use as some still contain chlorophyll and are high in antioxidants, nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.
Both fruits and vegetables are also high in dietary fiber, low in saturated fat, and have been popularly known to aid in weight loss in an overall diet. According to professional American dietary guidelines, you should aim for 4-5 cups or more a day of a combination of fruits and vegetables in order to maintain a healthy diet.
