6 different milks to choose from

There used to be a time when you could go down the dairy aisle and just pick up a quart of milk without much thought; however, today you have to decide between at least 6 different types of milk. There used to be a time when you opened your refrigerator and saw only cow's milk. It is much different today. You have more choices because milk doesn't always come from cows.

Cow's Milk is the tired and true. Most people had only one choice when they first started drinking milk. Therefore, that's what they are sticking with. However, the choice still has to be made about the kind of cow's milk. Is it whole milk, 2% milk, 1% milk or skim milk. (Read article to find out the differences.)

Soy Milk is made from soybeans. It is produced by soaking dry soybeans and grinding them with water. Soy milk contains about the same proportion of proteins as cow's milk. Soy milk can be made at home with traditional kitchen tools or with a soy milk machine. Soy milk is good to use in recipes.

Almond milk is a milky drink made from ground almonds. Almond milk contains no cholesterol or lactose. Almond milk can be made at home by combining ground almonds with water in a blender. Vanilla flavoring and sweeteners are often added. Almond milk is low in proteins and is good to use in smoothies.

Rice Milk is made by pressing the rice through a mill stream using diffusion to strain out the pressed grains. Rice milk is higer in fat, but it is easy to digest. Compared to cow's, rice milk contains more carbohydrates, but does not contain significant amounts of calcium or proteins, and no cholesterol or lactose.

Hemp milk or Hemp Seed Milk, is a drink made from hemp seeds that are soaked and ground into water, yielding a creamy nutty beverage. This is an inflammatory food and is good to use in cold cereals.

Coconut Milk is a sweet, milky white cooking base derived from the meat of a mature coconut. The color and rich taste of the milk can be attributed to the high oil content and sugars. This milk comes from coconut and is good to freeze into ice cream.

So which milk do you choose with so many preferences? It really depends on your personal taste.
