It will be a photo finish when a different species hits the starting block at the Sam Houston Race Park’s 5th Annual Wiener Dog Races on Saturday, February 11.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Wiener Dogs will take their place at the line starting at 7:30 p.m. Several races will commence with the dogs until 8:45 p.m. when the final race will take place and awards are given.
This favorite event showcases an evening of fun and Houston’s fastest wiener dogs according to SHRP. The dogs will race approximately 30 yards in between live thoroughbred horse races. The top three cash prizes are $250 for First Place, $150 for Second Place and $100 for Third Place.
Kyle Brown, SHRP’s director of marketing and media relations said an estimated 64 contestants will be vying for the top prize. Dogs will be distinguished by various colored jerseys in the 8 different heats. Each winner from the heat will move on to the finals.
“This is a family friendly evening that is affordable and fun,” said Brown. “Contrary to horses, most of the entrants are not career racers and not bred to race. The unpredictability of each race is what makes it so fun. Fewer dogs actually run a straight race to their owners. Most end up visiting with others or running the wrong direction.”
To commemorate the event, SHRP will be offering $1 hot dogs throughout the evening.
SHRP, located at 7575 North Sam Houston Parkway, is Houston’s premier racing and entertainment facility with 19 luxury suites, The Pavilion Centre and award winning dining options at the Winner’s Circle Restaurant and Jockey Club.
General admission tickets are $6 Adults; $4 Senior Citizens; children ages 12 and under FREE. Parking is free for general parking at live racing events. Details, go to www.shrp.com.
