The 5th Annual NY Surf Week is taking place from July 16-20, 2014. The five day event includes a surf contest, skate contest, art show, movie premiere and parties to celebrate the surf culture in New York. NY Surf Week is inclusive of all those who want to emerge themselves and even hosted an outing for the blind and visually impaired with “Surf for All”
This year’s event is being dedicated to NY surfer George "Geeza" Geiser. For the fifth consecutive year, NY Surf Week will continue the traditional Paddle out for Geeza on July 19th at 5:30pm at National Blvd Beach.
One of the biggest events of the week was the surf contest, featuring 32 competitors. The contest was won by Leif Engstrom, who took home a $3,000 prize purse.
Surf movie “Empire Now” made its world premiere this week on Thursday night as part of NY Surf Week at The Villain in Brooklyn, NY. Empire Now is the first NY surf thriller movie, featuring New York’s premiere surfers including Kurt Rist, Leif Engstrom, TJ Gumiela, Brian Pollak, Will Skudin, Balaram Stack, Zack Dayton, Tyler Maguire, Cliff Skudin and Dylan Stott.
Tonight, Raised Fist Propaganda will be hosting skateboard halfpipe beach jam contest in conjunction with a beach concert featuring Groundswell & Jahstix, The Disfunctional, The Montauk Project and DJ Ceeza.
The week will close with a few family events for the children, including a skate and surfing contest for and the Long Island and family premiere of NY surf thriller “Empire Now.”
