Flight Design seems to be one of the most popular light aircraft manufacturers. A flock of Flight Design CT series Light-Sport Aircraft flew in from all over the southwestern U.S. to attend the Fifth Annual National CT Fly-in in Page Arizona. The event took place over October 14-16, 2011.
With the largest fleet in the Light-Sport Aircraft sector by a wide margin (nearly double the #2 seller), Flight Design is the most likely company to hold annual single-brand gatherings. Few other LSA producers have enough aircraft in a region to make such an event viable.
“Approximately 35 CT planes attended the Fly-In,” observed John Doman, Director of Business Development and Global Sales & Marketing for Flight Design GmbH. Along with about 60 persons overall, John attended the Fly-in on behalf of manufacturer Flight Design GmbH of Germany. Most of the attendees were of retirement age, a common attribute among those buying and operating Light-Sport Aircraft, noted Doman. A few attendees were in the 25-40 age group. The majority of buyers purchased their CT for the ability to fly without an FAA Medical.
Conducted by the well-known aviation writer, Dave Calderwood, LOOP-TV sent a team of five to conduct media coverage of the event, which will appear later. “The LOOP team impressed me by their level of professionalism and abilities in photographic media,” said Doman. As part of the taping, Calderwood conducted a flight review using Larry Jeft’s nearly new Dynon SkyView-equipped CTLS.
People attending discovered spectacular scenery in beautiful weather. Several fly-outs occurred taking pilots and passengers to scenic location nearby to Page; all were within an hour or less flight including: Lake Powell; Monument Valley; Grand Canyon; Bryce Canyon; and Devil’s Backbone. Located in the high desert, Page, Arizona has a field elevation of 4,500 feet MSL.
The organizer and central person of the Fly-In is Roger Lee, who also heads up the popular www.ctflier.com website, with ample and able assistance from Tim Greer. “Roger did a fine job of keeping things running smoothly and on track,” stated Doman. “Roger presents a very positive and enthusiastic view of Flight Design to the attendees.”
