Merrill Garbus and the tUnE-yArDs bring their refreshing mélange of beats, vocals, loops and ukuleles careening unpredictably between pop and avant-garde to the Castro Theatre in April. The Castro has been the scene of many similar – always enticing – events over the years.
Onscreen: four silent shorts starring Buster Keaton, one of the greatest comic geniuses of 20th century American cinema.
See The Cook (1918) starring Buster Keaton and Fatty Arbuckle, who also directs, HERE. (Video does not include tUnE-yArDs/Mendoza music.)
Accompanying Garbus and the tUnE-yArDs at the Castro will be like-minded accomplice, guitarist Ava Mendoza. As she says in her bio, “Both solo and in groups, I like to develop specific tunes/riffs/compositional ideas, and then throw musical monkey wrenches into them live, forcing them to self-destruct and collide with free improvisation.”
The musicians will provide a sonic backdrop to Keaton’s One Week (1920), Good Night, Nurse! (1918), The Haunted House (1921) and The Cook (1918) starring Fatty Arbuckle (See video HERE), who also directs.
Date: April 23 at the Castro Theatre. For more information about tickets, show times, and the 55th annual SFIFF, click sffs.org.
