’52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History’ series, challenge #29: Water

Take time to record and preserve your own personal history as well as taking care of your family’s genealogy.  Use these prompts, as you see fit, to chip away at recording your memories as well as life’s lessons learned for the benefit of future descendants.  Use your computer or record your memories on paper.  Amy Coffin of the We Tree Blog has authored this fine series of 52 prompts (one for each week of the year) to help you achieve your personal history goals. These make great prompts for interviewing relatives, too.

Here’s this week’s challenge/prompt:  Water

Week 29: Do you have any memories of the sea or another body of water? Did you live there or just visit? What did you do there? You can also describe a body of water by which you live or visit in the present day.

Family Tree Gal, Carolyn Murphy resides in Mesa, AZ but grew up in Long Beach, CA near the Pacific Ocean.  As a teen, Cherry Beach was five minutes away from home and a favorite place to go to get tan, or try to get tan.  The Long Beach pier was beautiful at night due to the lights lining it, and the oil rigs in the distance were pleasantly disguised and lit with colored lights, as well.  When young, The Pike (an amusement park) was a festive place to spend time.  It was located right by the ocean.  Later, the Queen Mary was quite an attraction and welcomed addition to the shoreline.  Ports ‘O Call and Seaport Village with their shops and restaurants were also interesting places to spend time. . . and money.  “It was a pleasure to live a few minutes away from the ocean, feel the sea breeze, and call Long Beach my home.”
