Here’s this week’s personal history challenge/prompt: Summer
Week 28: What was summer like where and when you grew up? Describe not only the climate, but how the season influenced your activities, food choices, etc.
Rory Murphy of Mesa, AZ recalls his summers in Long Beach, CA as a teen. He especially loved surfing with one of his best friends, working at Arby’s and then heading off to Cherry Beach in the afternoon to play volleyball and have fun in the sun. “We’d often use our skim boards, then go to eat at Jack in the Box and stuff ourselves. Many times we’d drive to Huntington Beach with friends, guitars in hand, for an evening of fun around the fire ring.”
“On the Fourth of July, our entire neighborhood had a big Fourth of July picnic block party. The whole street was involved. All the neighborhood pools were open. There was the annual softball game and, of course, plenty of good food. These are a few of the memories I have of summer in Long Beach.”
Thanks go to Rory for sharing his recollections to illustrate how simple and quick memories can be to recall.
Family History Challenge: Take time to record and preserve your own personal history as well as taking care of your family’s genealogy. Use these prompts, as you see fit, to chip away at recording your memories as well as life’s lessons learned for the benefit of future generations. Use your computer or record your memories on paper. If you have a blog, post them there. These make great prompts for interviewing relatives, too.
