Romantic comedies are cliched by nature, so it's always surprising when one comes along that is original, sweet, and actually funny.
500 Days of Summer breaks the mold of romantic comedies by stating right at the beginning that it's not a love story. It's a story of a guy who falls for a girl who doesn't fall back.
Tom is a romantic. He believes in finding 'the one' and when he meets Summer he's sure it's finally happened. Summer likes him too, although her theories on love are far different than those of Tom's. Alas, the course of true love never did run smooth, so even though things look good for a while, eventually Tom has to face the truth.
The reason this movie works so well is thanks largely to the cast. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is completely endearing as Tom and you'll find yourself rooting for him. The adorable Zooey Deschanel is enchanting and it's easy to see why Tom is so smitten. The two have the kind of chemistry that far too many romcom couples lack. The script is also sharp and clever which is another thing they often lack.
500 Days of Summer is a romantic comedy for people who don't like romantic comedies. Give it a chance. You might be surprised.
