As the title implies, it's longer than a year but less than two years and as the narrator (Richard McGonagle) warns us, it is not a love story.  (500) Days of Summer explores the delightful, exciting, often painful progress of a relationship between two people and the conflicts of their individual needs, desires and personalities.

The film begins with a written author's note, " The following is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental.  Especially you Jenny Buckman.   Bitch."  It jumps around within the 500 days, labeling each day's segment.  This, at first seems confusing but makes perfect sense as the story unfolds.

Zooey Deschanel (Summer) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Tom Hanson) bring charm and wit to this film about a free-spirited young woman and an idealistic young man.  Gordon-Levitt was nominated for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.  Artfully directed by Marc Webb, and written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, it is an amusing tale of an office romance.  Boy meets girl.  Boy admires girl from afar...I won't spoil it for you except to say it includes an entertaining and humorous song and dance routine expressing Tom's happiness.

Gainesville residents can rent this film at their local Blockbuster or Movie Gallery.  It is also available from Netflix.
