Some Emma Watson fans were excited and others appalled when the news broke that hackers had unearthed documents connecting her to the “50 Shades of Grey” movie. However, according to a March 15 report by The Atlantic Wire, the “Harry Potter” star hasn’t signed on to play sex slave Anastasia Steele just yet.
Last year Emma denied rumors attaching her to the movie, but she’s remained quiet about the latest batch of reports. Instead a rep from Focus Features came forward to state that no casting talks have taken place yet. So perhaps what the hackers discovered was a document that referenced those old erroneous rumors.
It’s also possible that Focus Features is lying and that some stars like Emma Watson have already been contacted about the possibility of starring in the “50 Shades of Grey” movie. The producers, screenwriter Kelly Marcel, and author E. L. James have been rather secretive about the film, so perhaps everyone involved is just trying to keep the buzz about the movie going by saying that no one has been approached about starring in it and that it doesn’t have a director attached yet. Everyone associated with the movie has stated that casting talks won’t take place until a director is chosen, and there’s been some speculation that “Breaking Dawn” director Bill Condon has already snagged the job since E. L. James is rather chummy with his partner Jack Morrissey.
Emma Watson has also never said no to the Anastasia Steele role, and there could be a good reason for that -- perhaps the actress is still trying to decide if she wants to pursue the part.
It looks like Emma gets to cut loose a little by playing a bad girl burglar in “The Bling Ring,” but “50 Shades” would be far raunchier than anything most actresses her age have done. However, she once said this about filming nude scenes and sex scenes: “I've been saying since I was 16 that if it's the right role and important for character development and the story, then of course I'll do it.”
