It was announced today by Universal Pictures that Charlie Hunnam has had to decline the role of Christian Grey in the hotly anticipated film adaptation of the "mommy porn" book 50 Shades of Grey.
Hunnam has legions of fans due to his role as Jax Teller in the hit FX series Sons of Anarchy and a heated debate began amongst fans a few weeks ago when it was announced that he would star in Grey alongside Dakota Johnson.
“The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey," Universal Pictures said in a statement.
Fans of Hunnam are quickly announcing their pleasure that he will not be pursuing the role; however, Universal will have to move quickly to find a replacement lead after searching for almost a year before deciding on Charlie. Fans initially speculated for more than a year on who would be cast as Christian Grey and the early favorites were Matt Bomer of "White Collar" fame and Ian Somerhalder of "Lost".
The film is scheduled to begin production in Vancouver after principal filming for season six of Sons of Anarchy ended; the film has a release date of August 1, 2014.
