Readers of the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy have been talking about the books ever since they became a worldwide phenomenon last summer, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that the official casting for the upcoming film has inspired some debate, too. The two main roles were only filled yesterday, but a petition to replace the actors with two fan favorites has already been started and is garnering thousands of signatures.
Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam and Ben and Kate's Dakota Johnson were both announced yesterday as the two lead characters, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. Though author E.L. James was delighted to announce the casting news, some fans of the series felt there were other actors better suited for the job.
A petition on Change.org, which hosts petitions calling for everything from condemning Russia's anti-gay law at the 2014 Olympics to getting magazines to stop Photoshopping models, is now up in support of Matt Bomer of 'White Collar' and Alexis Bledel of 'Gilmore Girls' as Grey and Steele. Both actors were frequently mentioned as speculation and fan casting went on. The petition reached 2,000 signatures within hours of being posted and as of Tuesday evening had over 13,000 supporters.
According to the petition's description,
Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE"
Hunnam and Johnson have accepted their respective roles, but the Bomer/Bledel petition continues to pick up supporters nonetheless and, as The LA Times points out, those against the casting will be able to protest with their wallets when the movie is released.
