Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet commemorated 5 years of dancing, teaching, and inspiring April 21 and 26. The event kicked off on April 21 with "A Day with Misty Copeland". NC Dance Professionals had breakfast with Misty and discussed the current challenges in the dance industry across the state and nationally. There was much discussion about how each company can do their part in making dance accessible to minority groups. Next, Misty went to Royal Expressions School of Dance to teach master classes to over 40 eager students from across the state. Students came from Wilmington, Cary, Burlington, Winston-Salem and there was even a student from NYC! Finally, Misty spoke with aspiring ballerinas about her journey to become the first African American ballerina at American Ballet Theatre in 20 years! She also did a book signing and took photos with students.
On April 26, Royal Expressions School of Dance hosted their 5th annual recital! Then later that evening the professional company brought Journey to Become & BLOOM back to the stage. The company members were: Princess Johnson, Blaire Andrews, Shanelle Claytor, and Daniele Lambb. These productions are a part of the Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet original, abstract ballet repertoire choreographed by Princess Johnson.
It was a wonderful occasion and speaks volumes to the possibilities of Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet. Under the leadership of Princess Johnson, the company has established itself as a dance leader in NC. Johnson says, "This is just the beginning of greater things to come! We are excited to continue bringing professional dance artists to our beautiful state and as always it is dance that inspires!"
