A 5-year-old fires a gun at his school in Memphis, Tenn. On Aug. 22, NBC News reported that a kindergarten student brought the gun to the school in his backpack. The gun accidentally discharged just before 8 a.m. No one was injured in the shooting and the young boy was taken into police custody.
"Staff immediately took possession of that backpack. Our Shelby County school security team were contacted as well as local law enforcement. They're handling the investigation. From what we've heard, there's no evidence of harmful intent," said Christian Ross, external communication analyst for Shelby County schools (via NBC News).
The 5-year-old fires gun at school story is starting to go viral. However, the student didn't actually "fire" the gun himself. It's unclear where he got the gun or what he intended to do with it at the school. Police are investigating all aspects of the case and many suspect that the child's parents will be taken into custody pending the results.
"The school, located in north Memphis, serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade. WMCTV.com in Memphis reported some shaken-up parents were picking up their children from school," NBC News reported. Thankfully no one was hurt. The boy's intentions are still unknown.
