Today marks the first day of the week long national Screen-Free Week. Families, communities, and schools are encouraged to unplug televisions, computers, and gaming systems during Screen-Free Week.
Here are 5 ways your family can play and explore in Riverside County this week:
1. Visit the library - check out the Riverside County Library Event calendar for storytimes and family-friendly activities. If you can't find an event that fits your schedule, then consider checking out a large pile books and having your own storytime at home. Be creative while reading, your children will get a kick out of funny voices and animated movements.
2. Write books - even little ones can join in the fun. Have them draw pictures then tell you the story that goes along with those pictures. If you have older children, make it a collaborative effort. Each member of the family contributes to the story. The end result will be entertaining and surprising.
3. Family game night - pull out those dusty board games sitting on the shelf or grab a deck of cards. Some personal favorites are Yahtzee!, Clue, Scrabble, Rummy, and Crazy Eights.
4. Visit the museum - check out the Riverside Metropolitan Museum on Wednesday, April 20th from 1:30 - 4:30 pm for their Discovery Days. The theme this month is "Celebrate Earth Day", the program is geared for children ages 3 - 10.
5. Take a hike - Riverside County is home to a number of nature trails, reserves, and botanical gardens. Here are just a few to get you started:
- Mount Rubidoux Park - has 3.5 miles of paved roads and dirt trails.
- Hidden Valley Nature Center - there are numerous hiking trails, the nature center is open on Saturdays.
- UCR Botanical Gardens - this is especially fun for little ones.
Remember to unplug and enjoy life!
