When we think of going to the beach, images of tan sand filled with sunbathers and volleyball players comes to mind. But not all beaches are created equal. Here's a list of 5 of the most unique beaches found all over the world.
Papakolea, Hawaii
Papakolea Beach is known as the Green Sand Beach, because well, the sand is green. The beach has an abundance of an olive green mineral appropriately named 'Olivine' which is extracted and washed onto the sand by ocean forces.
Kaihalulu, Hawaii
This red sand beach found in Ka'uiki Hill isn't a beach you go to relax on or swim in--but certainly is a beautiful site. The sand is red because of the crumbling cindercone hill that surrounds the beach. The swimming conditions are usually pretty rough, and the passage to the beach is pretty slippery and covered in pine needles. Come for some beautiful pictures, but head elsewhere to get a tan.
Hyams Beach, Australia
You will be blinded by not only the bright sunshine on this New South Wales beach, but this beach owns the whitest sand in the world, according to the Guiness Book of World Records. The beach is bordered on both sides by natural perserves giving the beach a pristine look and feel surrounded by nature and wildlife.
Pfeiffer Beach, California
Great surfing is not the only thing that brings people to see this beautiful beach--it's the crazy purple sand. The hillsides surrounding the beach are filled with maganese garnet particles that are washed down onto the sand. The farther north you travel on the beach, the darker the purple becomes. Head to this beach for amazing sunset pictures.
Punalu'u Beach, Hawaii
Panalu'u Beach located on the Big Island in Hawaii is one of the most famous black sand beaches in Hawaii. Bring a blanket and spread out on this beach while watching the famous Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles who like to hang out and sunbathe.
