5 tips to relieve skin sagging

Jowls. Do you have them? Are you trying to prevent them? The word “jowls” conjures up the image of loose, sagging facial skin. It was once believed that nothing could help alleviate loose, sagging skin without going under the knife. Unfortunately, this loss of elasticity is all too common as we age. Today I'll share five ways to tighten loose, sagging skin on the face.

1. Make an egg white mask.

If you are in need of an instant “face lift” with immediate results for a special occasion, head to your kitchen and make an egg white and cornstarch mask. The results will be temporary, but they will be noticeable! Separate the white from the yolk of a large egg. Whisk the egg white in a dish and add in 1 teaspoon of cornstarch. Mix well. With a skincare brush or your clean fingertips, apply a generous amount of the mask to your face. Avoid the eyes. Lie down (this is important) for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse well with warm water.

2. Eat a diet low in processed sugar.

Did you know that eating a diet high in processed sugar actually can cause a breakdown of collagen in the skin? It’s true. By eating too much sugar, you are making your skin age faster. Skip the soft drinks and drink water or unsweetened iced tea instead. Have a fruit cup instead of cake. It just takes some conscious choices to help prevent skin sagging.

3. Drink plenty of water.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again–the more hydrated you are, the healthier your skin will be. Not only does consuming water help keep your complexion clear, it may help relieve skin sagging. Why? Drinking water helps your liver flush out toxins and nourish your skin cells. This can result in a plumper, firmer appearance to the facial skin.

4. Apply retinol cream at night.

Retinol is derived from Vitamin A and is a potent anti-aging and firming ingredient. This active ingredient is known for its wrinkle-fighting ability. Over time, it can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and firm loose skin. It is important that you only use this ingredient at night, though, as it causes photosensitivity. I recommend Alpha Hydrox Retinol Night Res-Q. While not paraben-free, I have found this to be the most effective over the counter treatment.

5. Try Manuka honey.

Manuka honey is not your average honey sold in the squeeze bottles at the grocery store. This unique honey actually comes from bees who feed on the tea tree plant. Manuka honey has been shown to boost collagen levels in the skin, neutralize free radicals, stimulate circulation, and increase skin elasticity. This is a wonderful natural ingredient for loose, sagging skin.

Tightening Loose Skin Naturally

Rapid weight loss and aging are the most common causes of loose, sagging skin. While most treatments for this involve expensive trips to the plastic surgeon, there are natural ways to tighten loose facial skin. Know that these will take time. Stick with it and in a few weeks, you should start to see results.
