In case you’ve grown somewhat tired of Stefan (Paul Wesley) or Damon (Ian Somerhalder), this year of the originals on The Vampire Diaries will bring a lot of new faces to the screen. Look, we're not saying we are tired of them or anything, but we appreciate the fact that the show stays five steps ahead of what its audience thinks it wants, thereby delivering some fantastic surprises and (in the words of series executive producer Julie Plec) "all kinds of crazy shit that hits the fan." And we wouldn't want it any other way, right? Well, if you don't mind being spoiled about some minor plot points coming up, keep reading because we have some juicy scoop for you!
While Klaus (Joseph Morgan)’s life consists of six siblings and not all will be able to be introduced this season, some very important members of his brood will. Plec told reporters in Los Angeles that “certainly the mother is going to be someone we meet in the past, as will other siblings…[and] we will see Elijah (Daniel Gillies) again. In fact, right now we’re about to start shooting an episode that takes us back a lot actually that takes us back to the origins story.” How far back? Well, that’s the other fun part! The Vampire Diaries will be visiting year 1000, and you know how we love our period pieces...
But what else is going down that has LA TV Insider Examiner particularly excited?
With Stefan off playing Jack the Ripper in his own twisted way with Klaus, Elena (Nina Dobrev) is left behind in Mystic Falls with Damon, and she is going to have to deal with the “elephant in the room” that are the feelings she may have for him. “There’s all these fun little stolen moments and romantic banter, and that hasn’t gone unnoticed with other people,” Plec pointed out. “Now that Elena’s back in Mystic Falls, trying to pick up the pieces and go on with her life…we’re going to have some fun with that!”
New bromances abound! Klaus and Stefan are going to bond more deeply than you might imagine, but also Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) are getting closer. Whether that means Matt turns to Jeremy during his own rough patch (episode five) will remain to be seen, though. Plec teased that he has a really beautiful story coming up that starts on the night before senior year begins, which is an annual prank night for the teenagers of the town, but things of course don't go accordingly to plan. "For Matt, specifically, it's kind of bittersweet because just the beginning of last year, really, you know, he was a football player, he had Elena, just coming out of that relationship; he and his friends were good; he had his sister," Plec said. "There's a sense of life that he's lost over the two seasons of our show, and it's really hurting him, and we really get to explore that in a really beautiful and tragic way."
Bonnie (Kat Graham) returns from spending the summer with the so-called normal side of her family, just happy to be returned to the supernatural greatness that is Mystic Falls and her slightly undead boyfriend. However, Caroline (Candice Accola), after learning her father was the one trying to repress the vampire in her is going to have to deal with the fact that life will never be normal again. The struggle becomes realizing that despite the “pull herself up by her bootstraps” side of herself, which she always attributed to her father, it may actually be her mother (Marguerite MacIntyre) who truly understands who-- or what-- she is now. Plec shared that “all of her strength and all of her confidence came from her relationship with her father, but now we see that when the chips fell, the surprising person who was there was her mom…And Caroline gets a few good moments in the next episode where we see just how she’s going to channel this experience into action.”
"There's an agenda happening with our ghosts," Plec continued. "As we get into...Bonnie's return and Jeremy holding the secret now, and he has been for a few months; he hasn't told her; he hasn't fessed up to it, and at what point does it become not wanting to let her in on something or an out-and-out lie? We're going to see the emotional consequences...of Bronnie bringing Jeremy back to life. It's put a rift in her romantic relationship with him. And also over the next couple of episodes our arc is to see what the ghostly and supernatural consequences are to that." So basically, more Bonnie and Jeremy screen time coming and a definitive (at least for now) wrap up of certain characters we hoped we had been rid of once before? Sold!
