5 Things it Takes to Be a Great Personal Trainer

See also

Many people who love to workout and live an active lifestyle are interested in becoming a personal trainer. While it is a good and rewarding career, not everyone who strives to achieve it actually succeeds in it. Very few people realize that personal training is actually a talent and a rare skill that must be mastered in order to thrive at it. Here are 5 things that make a personal trainer great:

1. Personality- If clients don't like you, then it doesn't matter how much knowledge you have or what information you know, they won't work with you. In other words, they won't pay you any money. Optimism, enthusiasm, positive energy and attitude are must haves for anyone striving to be a great trainer.

2. Results- Many people get certified by the top programs available such as A.C.E., N.A.S.M., N.C.S.A., but knowledge of how to get results is not enough. A great trainer must be able to APPLY knowledge, and apply it to a diversity of different clients with unique goals to generate results. This requires creativity.

3. Be in Shape- A great trainer must practice what they preach. If a trainer cannot keep themselves in shape according to the goals their clients want to reach, then it will be hard to believe that in theory alone they can help their clients. Once again, this is more proof of what lays beyond a piece of paper.

4. Leadership- A trainer must possess the discipline they preach to clients to achieve the results desired. If a trainer does not keep their diet in check, workout 5 times a week, do cardio, and take on new challenges and ways of changing the body, then they will not be a good role model for their clients.

5. Sales- A great trainer has to be able to gain clients through their own individual ability to promote value in their program. But this only comes from the confidence that their program works. Confidence their program works only comes from experience and proven results. A great trainer must be able to convince their prospect that $500-$600 a month is worth the investment, but then they must be able to deliver top notch results that makes their client renew and see the value of living a healthy and active lifestyle as an investment in the long run.

There are many more qualities that make a trainer great, but these are the essentials. A trainer must inspire and motivate their clients, push them beyond the level they would push themselves in a safe manner, and generate quick and rapid results that are noticeable week after week after week. Once progress ceases, then a good trainer must have the creativity to generate a new approach that will continue to progress each client to new goals. They must also possess empathy- the ability to put themselves in the client's shoes and feel for what they are going through, which is why many trainers are often looked at as psychologists in addition.

Depending on the region, personal trainers are one of the most underestimated professionals in society. They serve in the "preventative" side of medicine, although they can deal in rehab. They prevent clients from having to rely on pills and medicine to improve their health, and get them off of having to resort to such ways.
