The #5 Stanford Cardinal cruised past Bay Area rival San Jose State Spartans with a 34-13 win on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the Stanford Stadium in Stanford, CA. The Cardinal defense held the Spartans to a mere 35 yards rushing and sacked San Jose State QB David Fales four times.
Unlike last year where Stanford eked out a 20-17 win against this same scrappy Spartans squad, the Cardinal offense were ready and scored on its first three possessions. RB Tyler Gaffney rushed for 104 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Gaffney was out of football last season after a stint at pro baseball. The Cardinal scored 17 points in the first half while the Spartans only managed two field goals for a 17-6 halftime score.
The Cardinal offense added 17 more points in the second half while the defense held the Spartans to a Fales-Noel Grisgby 13-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. The Cardinal defense allowed just three third down conversions out of 12 San Jose State attempts all game long. The Spartans, however, managed to convert three fourth downs and Fales passed for 216 yards.
Stanford QB Kevin Hogan passed for 207 yards and two touchdowns. WR Ty Montgomery hauled in four receptions for 81 yards and scored a touchdown.
The Cardinal (1-0) will visit Army next Saturday, September 14, 2013 before hosting Arizona State the following week while the San Jose State Spartans (1-1) will visit Minnesota on Saturday, September 21, 2013 following an open date.
